Common Barriers to Fitness Success and Strategies to Succeed

Dec 09, 2024

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right in your fitness journey, but the results just aren’t showing up? You’re not alone.

The truth is, reaching your fitness goals is a lot about recognizing and overcoming the barriers that might be holding you back... and we all face them!

Whether it’s mindset struggles, lack of consistency, or unrealistic expectations, these challenges can really slow down even the best intentions.

The good news? Once you identify what’s standing in your way, you can take steps to overcome it.

In this article, I break down some of the most common struggles I've helped clients tackle during my 10 years as a personal trainer, as well as those I've overcome personally, with potential strategies to overcome them.

  • All-or-Nothing Mindset
I see this one A LOT. Many people believe they need to follow their plan perfectly or it’s not worth doing at all. This mindset can lead to giving up entirely after a small setback, like missing a workout or eating an unplanned meal. This can be detrimental to your success.

Instead, learn to be flexible and adaptable. Perfection is not going to happen, so you will need to make adjustments and do your best with what you have (time, equipment, schedule changes, etc.) Progress comes from consistency over time, not perfection every day.

  • Program Hopping: Sticking to one plan longterm matters MUCH more than bopping around and starting new "magic" programs all the time. Consistency is king. Find one program that interests you and that you believe you can stick to... Find a coach that you trust to draw the roadmap... then all you have to do is follow it. Nothing else. Just run it through from start to finish and see what happens.
  • Lack of Patience
In a world of instant gratification, it’s easy to expect quick results, especially with all the hacks and quick fixes on social media these days. However, fitness transformations, whether strength, weight loss, just better health in general takes weeks, months, or even years. You didn't gain all that weight in 30 days, right? How can you expect to lose it that quickly then?

Unrealistic timelines can lead to disappointment and quitting. Focus on sustainable progress, tracking metrics, and celebrate all of the small wins along the way.

  • Inconsistency
Sporadic efforts in workouts or nutrition are one of the biggest roadblocks to success. Skipping workouts, eating healthy a low percentage of the time, or neglecting recovery makes it hard to see results. Building daily or weekly routines, no matter how small, lays the groundwork for long-term success.

I always preach the 80/20 rule -- 80% of the time, do the right thing that sends you directly down the path to your goals (follow your nutrition plan, be consistent with your training, get enough high quality sleep). 20% of the time... be flexible. Go out to eat with your family or friends, have a drink, take a rest day to prioritize work that needs to be done. 80/20 rule works great because you are what you do most often.

  • Unrealistic Expectations
Social media often showcases dramatic before-and-after photos or unattainable physiques, setting unrealistic standards. This can make your progress feel inadequate. Set goals based on your body, lifestyle, and timeframe... not someone else’s. Remember, small, sustainable changes lead to lasting results.

  • Overcomplicating Fitness
Keep it simple. Lift heavy weight, don't be sedentary, eat mostly whole/nutrient dense foods, drink water, sleep well, and repeat. It can really be that simple. Find what works for YOU and stick to it.

  • Poor Time Management
“I don’t have time” is a common excuse, but what that really means is that you don't prioritize your fitness and health so you don't make time for it in your day. As they say, if it matters to you, you will make time. But fitness doesn’t require hours in the gym or extensive meal prep. Scheduling shorter, efficient workouts or preparing simple meals can save time while keeping you on track. Build a home gym or just get a few pieces of equipment at home like a kettlebell and a sandbag.

You have to prioritize your health - it’s the foundation for every other aspect of your life and if you don't have it, you don't really have much of anything.

  • Neglecting Recovery
Recovery is when your body adapts and grows stronger, yet many people push too hard without giving themselves time to rest. This can lead to injury, exhaustion, or stalled progress. Sleep, hydration, active recovery, and rest days are essential components of any successful fitness program.

  • Not Working Hard Enough: Opposite of the last one. Don’t confuse activity with intensity in the gym. You need to lift heavy and put in some serious effort. If it isn't hard, you're probably not going to see much change, if any at all.
  • Comparison to Others
It’s natural to look at others for inspiration, but constant comparison can harm your motivation and your mental health as a whole. Everyone’s body, lifestyle, and starting point are different. Focus on your own journey, progress, and goals rather than someone else’s highlight reel (*cough, Instagram, cough*).

  • Lack of Education
Following outdated advice or misconceptions (like avoiding carbs entirely or thinking cardio is the only way to lose weight) can hinder results. Take time to educate yourself or work with a professional who can guide you toward evidence-based practices tailored to your goals.

  • Mindset Barriers
I personally think this has to be in my top 3 list. Most people do not truly believe, deep down that they can accomplish what they want to accomplish with their fitness and health. It may feel out of reach because the results do take time, but as soon as this mindset shift happens, where you believe in you wholeheartedly, everything changes.

Negative thought patterns like fear of failure, perfectionism, or self-doubt can stop you before you even start. Building a growth mindset, where you see challenges as opportunities, is crucial. Remember, fitness is as much mental as it is physical.

As you have probably gathered, conquering the barriers to your fitness goals starts with self-awareness. You have to recognize that there is a problem before you can implement actionable strategies to fix them. Identify which obstacles resonate most with your journey, then focus on small, achievable changes - just ONE barrier at a time for best results!

Shifting your mindset to view any of these setbacks as learning opportunities instead of failures is probably one of the greatest things you can do, and ALWAYS celebrate progress, no matter how small. A win is a win!

Consistent progress is not perfection - so change that in your mind as well. It’s about consistently showing up and making adjustments as you go. Be flexible and give yourself some grace. If you miss a workout, so be it, but be sure to hit the next one.

As long as you are working on something that will help you progress, you're headed in the right direction, and there's nothing else you can do except consistently work on it over time.

When in doubt, seek guidance from credible sources or a coach to create a plan customized for you. This can be extremely helpful in terms of accountability, but also measuring progress objectively.
